The Iconic Trail in Oklahoma Everyone Should Hike Once in Their Lifetime

Exploring Oklahoma’s hiking trails is one of the best ways to experience the Oklahoma landscape. Lord knows, we certainly have our fair share of scenic hiking trails to explore! There’s one iconic trail in Oklahoma that I think everyone should hike at least once in their lifetime, and that’s the Little Baldy Trail. Not only is it iconic, but it may be considered one of the best hikes in Oklahoma.

Tucked away in the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, the Little Baldy Trail is an underrated hike that clocks in just shy of a mile. It’s an out-and-back trail with plenty of scenic views along the way and an elevation gain of only 144 feet. Set aside between 30 minutes and an hour to complete the hike and enjoy all the scenery along the way.

The trailheads for the Little Baldy Trail are located at the Doris Campground and the Quanah Parker Dam. Since this trail is short and sweet, it’s perfect for kids, and dogs are also welcome to join in on the fun, but keep them on a leash. 

The Quanah Parker Dam, situated across a canyon within the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, offers breathtaking views. It’s the perfect spot to snag some selfies and family pics. And, yes, you can walk across the dam, making this one truly unique hiking experience!

Overall, this trail is a pretty easy hike as far as Oklahoma hikes are concerned. There is only 144 feet of elevation gain, so it’s perfect for beginner hikers. You’ll be hiking to the top of a small rocky knoll, and there are some steep sections, but the 360-degree views are just offensively beautiful and worth every step. This is a great sunset hike, too!

Even though the trail is typically easy to follow, it’s always a good idea to have an AllTrails account and have the map ready to pull up in case you find yourself off the trail. It’s unlikely that you’ll be the only one on the trail, but safety is part of the hiking essentials package. 

Speaking of safety, keep an eye on your surroundings. Snakes are fairly common in these parts, particularly rattlesnakes. Bigger critters include bison, longhorn, and Rocky Mountain elk.

This iconic trail in Okhaloma is open year-round. Visit early in the morning or on a weekday if you want to escape the crowds. If you really want to have the place to yourself, check out this trail at dawn. Not only are the sunrises spectacular, but there's nothing like the feeling of being the only one around.
