Oklahoma is known for its flat land, but it actually has one of the most diverse topographies in the country...filled with mountains, hills and forests. One of the most beautiful places in the state - the Wichita Mountains - has a hiking trail hiding deep within the mountains that will transport you to another world. Take a look at the gorgeous scenery this trail will lead you through.
The Wichita Mountains are rocky promontories full of natural beauty and breathtaking views. These mountains are home to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge – 59,000 spectacular acres full of free-roaming wildlife.
The refuge is home to a variety of protected wildlife, rugged landscapes, diverse flora and majestic beauty.
There are lots of hiking options in the Wichita Mountains, with hikes for all different levels.
The Elk Mountain Trail is one of our favorites because it's the perfect distance for most hikers. This 2.2-mile trail is lightly trafficked and is surrounded by astounding beauty.
The path has lots of different terrain, including large boulders to explore.
The views from the summit are otherworldly and you can see for miles and miles in every direction.
The hike takes about two hours roundtrip. You definitely want to plan on spending some time at the top to enjoy the scenery.
The trailhead starts at the entrance to Charons Garden Wilderness. We recommend parking at the Sunset area for the closest access.
Grab those hiking boots and get ready to trek across forest, rocky mountains and over grassy prairies.
If you're looking for a hike in northeastern Oklahoma, check out this trail in Natural Falls State Park.
