Find 3 Bucket-List-Level Views in Oklahoma Without Needing to Be an Expert Hiker
Discover 3 bucket-list views in Oklahoma you can reach without expert hiking, from scenic overlooks to easy-access wonders.
If you think you need to make a long arduous trek on a trail like the wild and rugged Charon's Garden Trail or the Baldy Point Summit Trail at Quartz Mountain State Park to experience extraordinary views, I'm here to tell you that you don't. Several short, sweet, and easy trails lead to bucket-list-worthy views in Oklahoma, and, best of all, you don't have to be an expert hiker to reach them. Here are three to start with:
1. Bison and Longhorn Loop
- Location: Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, Comanche County
- Length: 1.5-mile loop
- Need to Know: There's no fee to visit the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge. The Bison and Longhorn Loop has some overgrown areas and rocky sections, so wearing hiking boots/shoes is advised.
Home to the strenuous Narrows Trail to Eagle Mountain that only expert and prepared hikers should attempt, not all hikes at Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge are that challenging. The Bison and Longhorn Loop is easy enough for the entire family and offers views of several notable natural landmarks, including French Lake and the French Lake Dam. You'll also enjoy scenic mountain vistas, as well as wildlife and wildflowers. Additionally, kids can have fun climbing on rocks along the trail.
2. Quanah Parker Lake Trail
- Location: Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, Indiahoma
- Length: 1-mile, out-and-back
- Need to Know: There's no fee to access the wildlife refuge. Check the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service website for any closures before you go. The trail is not well-marked, so download a map from AllTrails+ before you go.
Quanah Parker Lake Trail is a fascinating hike that starts out crossing the Quanah Parker Dam, set in a canyon. The views of the lake and Quanah Creek are remarkable from this spot, but only seem to get better as you hike on. The trail leads along the southwest portion of the picturesque Quanah Parker Lake to a bridge crossing through a lush forest and magnificent bluffs.
3. Sunrise Trail
- Location: Quartz Mountain State Park, Lone Wolf
- Length: 0.4-mile loop
- Need to Know: The trailhead is located down the road from Live Oak Campground. There is a daily parking fee for the state park, and you can reserve a parking pass on the Oklahoma State Parks website. Rattlesnakes are common in this area, so be aware as you walk.
Sunrise Trail at Quartz Mountain State Park is a quick trek with scenery so breathtaking you'll want to spend as much time as possible enjoying it. Massive boulders and a ridge enhance the trail's beauty. The start of the trail is a bit steep, so please keep this in mind before attempting it, especially if you or anyone in your group has mobility issues.
