This Scenic Oklahoma Hike Is Even Better in the Winter

Discover why this scenic destination stands out as the best winter hike in Oklahoma, with peaceful snow-covered woods, rocky overlooks, and barren forest paths perfect for a cold-weather adventure.

Winter hikes in Oklahoma rarely look like a Norman Rockwell painting, but when the Sooner State is lucky enough to get snow, it's a beautiful sight. Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness in Tulsa is one of the most reliable destinations for a snowy hike because of its relatively high elevation (for Oklahoma, anyway) of 919 feet. Whether you get to walk in a winter wonderland or not, there's something undeniably therapeutic about hiking this time of year. The crisp air and still, barren landscape create a calming atmosphere that encourages deep introspection. I always feel more at ease after getting outside on a cold day, and I hope this hike will do the same for you.

It's hard to believe the Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness Area is just 10 minutes from downtown Tulsa. This rugged oasis in the heart of the city feels like a world apart, spanning over 300 acres of undeveloped land along the Arkansas River. There are four main trails, but they all begin at the same trailhead and interconnect, so most hikers don't stay on one route the whole time. Each trail offers a unique experience; for example, the Red Trail is renowned for its sunsets, while the Yellow Trail runs parallel to the river. The Blue Trail climbs to the top of Turkey Mountain, and the Red Trail is short and flat, making it perfect for beginners.

The trails are well-marked and maintained, so you never have to worry about getting lost. Choose your own adventure and enjoy the scenery, which, in my opinion, is much better in the winter. Sure, vibrant wildflowers and lush greenery are lovely, but I'm partial to moody skies and watching deer frolic in the trees. Plus, the park is far less busy when it's cold, and the silence is refreshing.

From the summit of Turkey Mountain, a panoramic vista overlooks the river and the distant Tulsa skyline. Bare trees and pale skies complete the wintry scene for a view worthy of a postcard.

Wooden boardwalks make you feel like you're in a fairytale, and Oklahoma's largest stone staircase is incredibly rewarding to climb. Of course, snow would be the icing on the cake, blanketing the ground and glinting in the sunlight. But even if there isn't a hint of frost to be seen, this is still one of the best winter hikes in Oklahoma. Give your soul a break from the noise of the city and allow the winter air and quiet woods to invigorate you.
