Oklahoma isn't known for caves, but it does have a few that are worth visiting. For an extensive underground tunnel system, Alabaster State Caverns is the place to go. But if you're looking for an easy hike to aboveground caves, head to Robbers Cave State Park in the San Bois Mountains of southeastern Oklahoma. Robbers Cave has over 12 miles of trails that wind you through caves, lakes, streams and breathtaking scenery. The popular caves are made of sandstone (not the usual limestone) and were popular hideouts for outlaws Jesse James and Belle Star. Here are some great photographs of the aboveground caves and Robbers Cave State Park:
Visitors can park at the Robbers Cave parking lot to access the trails.
A trail leads up to a steep bluff, but it is short and easily doable by most skill levels.
The area is full of boulders and unique places to explore.
You'll find the entrance to Robbers Cave at the top of the bluff.
Carvings inside the caves date from the days of the Old West outlaws.
You never know what's around the corner in Robbers Cave State Park.
The park not only houses incredible caves but it also protects thousands of acres of the San Bois Mountain region.
These aboveground caves are a fun experience and are waiting to be explored!
