We Did the Research, This Is Officially the Most Unique Hiking Trail Name in Ohio
Quiverheart Falls Trail may be the most unique trail name in Ohio. It lies within the equally whimsical Quiverheart Gorge Nature Preserve.
We're lucky to have thousands of miles of scenic hiking trails here in the Buckeye State, all with features and charm unique to their own topography. Ohio's myriad trails, of course, give rise to hundreds of trail names: some mundane, some descriptive, and others strange, bizarre, or unique. Take, for instance, the Lakefront Trail in Painesville Township. It's a trail that runs along the Lake Erie shoreline. Makes sense, right? You know what to expect. Then you have others, like the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail, which hint at the route's historic roots. Pretty straightforward. Then there are trail names that, when you read them, you may scratch your head or even do a double-take. Top among these, if you ask me, is Quiverheart Gorge near Peebles. I think it's probably the most unique trail name in Ohio.
Okay, technically speaking, Quiverheart Gorge is the name of the preserve—Quiverheart Gorge Nature Peserve—and not a hiking trail. You'll find two trails within the preserve: Quiverheart Falls Trail and Whispering Fern Trail. Quiverheart Gorge or Quiverheart Falls: Both are pretty unique. "Quiverheart" describes nothing about the topography of the trail or the gorge, nor does it offer any hints at the area's history: 200 years ago, a steam-powered blast furnace was installed, the first west of the Appalachians, and the gorge was clear cut.
Although you'll find little insight into the name in the gorge or along either of its trails, you may get a sense of where they were going with it when you see what this hike has to offer. The preserve protects 99 acres of a deep, dolomite gorge with rock formations, overhanging ledges, and small streams running through it. Quiverheart Falls Trail is a moderately challenging, 1.8-mile loop that explores many of the gorge's highlights, some of which may make your heart quiver upon seeing them.
The reward for hiking the Quiverheart Falls Trail during the rainy season is a picturesque veil of water that slides over a ledge of slick rocks and into the gorge. Although the waterfall only spills over the ledge when there's been sufficient rain to feed the volume of the stream, this part of the gorge is striking and, waterfall or no, worth the hike to see. If your heart's quivering for more, extend the outing by tacking the 1.25-mile Whispering Fern Loop onto your hike. This latter trail is only accessible from the Quiverheart Falls loop.
Whether you love the name, hate the name, or are indifferent to it, you'll definitely be enamored of Quiverheart Gorge, and it certainly belongs on your Buckeye State hiking adventure list. The preserve is open to the public for day use year-round. Pets are not allowed. For reviews and hiking information, check out the listing on AllTrails, and for more details about the preserve itself, visit its page on the Arc of Appalachia website.
