Visit Chapel Cave By Horseback On This Unique Tour In Ohio

Explore the magical 21 Horses Cave in Ohio via a scenic horseback ride through Hocking Hills.

Imagine riding horseback through an enchanted forest and stumbling upon a cathedral-like cave. Here in Ohio, you can have a real life adventure just like that. There's a Hocking Hills bridle trail that leads to 21 Horses Cave. It's a magical horseback tour you won't soon forget.

The journey to 21 Horses Cave begins at the parking area across the street from the Hocking Climbing and Rappelling Area, right off of Big Pine Road/St. Rt. 374.

Because the trailhead is not located within the park or a nature preserve, many visitors might not be familiar with the trail.

The White Bridle Trail will lead you to the cave. Simply follow the white markings through the forest.

On foot, it's about a 30-minute hike to the cave. If you're traveling horseback, it's about a 15-20 minute ride.

It's a magical experience, journeying through the forest on a beautiful horse. Multiple different tour companies are available in the area, including Happy Trails Horseback Rides and Blue Moon Acres.

Please note: Both companies are closed during the winter, but open again for the spring. For more information about Happy Trails Horseback Rides, click here

As you make your way uphill to the cave, you'll feel as if you've stumbled upon a best kept secret.

The cave is often referred to as "Chapel Cave" because of its triangular opening and pointed top.

It's also known as "21 Horses Cave" because 21 horses can supposedly fit in the cave.

Inside, the view overlooking the forest below is simply stunning. It's a memorable journey you won't soon forget.

Note: The trail is fairly strenuous and muddy, as you cross multiple creek beds along the way. If you hike the trail without a horse, we recommend doing so after several days of no rain.
