If you're looking for a unique road trip that won't take you too far from Cincinnati, consider exploring one of the many cave systems within driving distance from the city. These natural wonders are mysteriously hidden beneath our ground and you'll be amazed at what you'll see as you descend into them. After a short drive, you'll feel like you are entering another world in these seven caves near Cincinnati.
1. Ohio Caverns - West Liberty, Ohio
In West Liberty, you'll find Ohio's largest cavern and definitely one of the most beautiful. The caverns remain a steady 54 degrees year round, making it the perfect destination any time of year. The unique crystal formations and winding pathways will amaze you from start to finish.
2. Seneca Caverns - Riverton, West Virgina
It's a bit of a drive to reach Seneca Caverns (about 6 hours from Cincinnati), but it's well worth the trip! The owners of this amazing natural wonder have been able to preserve it almost to the state it was in when it was discovered by two boys and their dog in 1872. New features continue to be discovered as this mesmerizing cave changes over time.
3. The Caves of Hocking Hills State Park - Logan, Ohio
Hocking Hills is one of the prime hiking areas in the state and its caves are one of its most lovely features. The most popular are Old Man's Cave and Ash Cave, both open for exploring, but you never know what hidden caves you'll find while exploring this park.
4. Olentangy Indian Caverns - Delaware, Ohio
A natural wonder right in central Ohio, Olentangy Indian Caverns was used as a hideout and home by the Wyandotte Indians, years before anyone else ever found it. During the summer, you can choose to go on a guided tour or explore the cave on your own. The 58 stairs you descend to enter the cave might seem ominous, but once you are below, the atmosphere is truly miraculous.
5. Perry's Cave - Put-in-Bay, Ohio
This family fun center has plenty of activities to keep you busy for an entire day, but the main feature is the historic cave tour. This natural limestone cave is an Ohio Natural Landmark and lies 52 feet below the surface of South Bass Island in Lake Erie.
6. Mammoth Cave - Mammoth Cave, Kentucky
The world's longest cave system can be found just a few short hours south of Cincinnati in Mammoth Cave National Park. This hugely popular destination is the ultimate in cave exploration and you can choose from a number of tours, from an easy stroll to climbing through tight spaces in the pitch black. There are also plenty of other attractions in the area to warrant a road trip.
7. Carter Caves - Olive Hill, Kentucky
This area of Kentucky has the highest concentration of caves to be found in any other part of the state. You can choose to go on a guided tour, or explore on your own where you can expect to find arches, caves. and swinging bridges out on the trails. It's another unique, mysterious destination, just a few short hours from Cincinnati.
