This Scenic North Dakota Trail Is Even Better in the Winter

The Turtle River Nature Trail in North Dakota is one of the state's best hikes. It's even more beautiful in the winter.

Some places, wonderful as they may be in spring, summer, or fall, take on a downright magical feel when they're layered with a blanket of snow. Sure, snow and cold can occasionally make one reluctant to leave the house, but that's what winter gear is for, right? Besides, if folks in North Dakota spent the entire winter indoors, we wouldn't get outside much of the year. One spot that I think is definitely bundling up for is the Turtle River Nature Trail at Turtle River State Park near Arvilla.

Turtle River State Park is located about 20 minutes west of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and, as its name implies, it protects about 784 pristine wooded acres along the banks and in the valley of the Turtle River. The best way to experience the park is on foot via the Turtle Lake Nature Trail, a 6.4-mile loop with enough ups and downs to be considered moderately challenging.

In the winter, this wooded landscape becomes, for lack of a better cliche, a veritable winter wonderland. It's a perfect spot to spend an afternoon tromping through the woods, listening to your boots crunch in the snow, the chattering of squirrels, and the echoes of hammering woodpeckers. Look up, and you may see a great horned owl staring back at you.

With the steep sections, I recommend traction devices for your shoes or strapping on snowshoes when the snow is deep. If you're a Nordic ski enthusiast, you'll be pleased to know that portions of the trail are groomed for cross-country skiing. This trail is a delight at any time of year—which is why we think it's one of the best trails in North Dakota—but it's especially wonderful in winter.

If you need a place to warm up after your winter adventure at Turtle River State Park, you'll definitely want to check out this quaint country Airbnb located just minutes from both the park and the city of Grand Forks. With three bedrooms and one bath, it can easily accommodate up to six guests, so if you want to bring your family or friends along while you explore this part of North Dakota, there's plenty of room for everyone. A full kitchen ensures you'll get your energy back quickly, and a private sauna will help to warm you up after a day outside. There's even a fire pit, if you want to stay warm while doing some stargazing or waiting for the northern lights to pop later in the evening. Pay a visit to the property's listing on Airbnb for more information or photos and to make your reservation.

The Turtle Lake Nature Trails is definitely one of my favorite winter hikes in North Dakota—especially in the eastern half. Have you been out on this trail in the snow?
