North Carolina’s Soco Falls Is a Frozen Masterpiece of Nature
Soco Falls is beautiful any time of the year but while chasing frozen waterfalls in North Carolina this twin cascade is one you will not want to miss.
As the weather starts to dip into the freezing temperatures, it's time to get out and chase some frozen waterfalls in North Carolina! These are some of my favorite winter hiking destinations because you never know what you will find, and if you time it right, you are treated to a rare icy natural wonder. One of those great locations is Soco Falls, which is an amazing waterfall when the weather is warm, but don’t discount it during the colder winter months. There is a unique beauty to behold here with very little effort. So one day, during a cold snap, make your way to the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains for a one-of-a-kind winter treat.
Soco Falls is a popular little detour for adventurers who are traveling along the Blue Ridge Parkway. However, you don’t need to be traversing the parkway to visit this amazing waterfall. The trail itself is merely a walk down to the viewing platform. Here, you will get a full picture of the falls, and it is even more magical when the trees slump under the weight of freshly fallen snow.
The exciting part about chasing waterfalls in the winter is that you never know what they might look like. Sometimes, you will traverse the trail with a light covering of snow, and other times, you will see a wall of ice greeting you as sections of water still freely flow.
Although it is rare to see this mighty waterfall fully freeze over, if you do catch this occurring, you are in for a real treat. The twin falls converge into the steam at the base, which is undeniably beautiful regardless of the weather. So no matter what time of the year you go, you won’t regret it.

I personally love to go to the base of any waterfall I visit, and to get to the bottom of Soco Falls, well, it’s quite an adventure. The path down is very steep and filled with many slippery rocks. There is a series of ropes tied to the trees to help if needed, but you might want to also have a good pair of hiking poles handy, especially if it is icy. Don’t be too intimidated by the trail; I traversed it and didn’t have any issues.
The view from the base of the falls is especially beautiful and well worth the effort. Even if you don’t see any snowflakes, you will no doubt be glad you stopped for this short but sweet little trail. Soco Falls is a stunning sight to see all year round, but when it comes to frozen waterfalls in North Carolina, this one is pretty special. It's not every day you get to see two waterfalls together!
We think these falls are totally worth the trip! And if you're looking for more ways to make your excursion memorable, visit our itinerary planner for nearby recommendations!
