North Carolina is home to a variety of delightful gardens (you can see two of them here, and here) and they're all charming in their own way. But not every garden has the maze-like layout of the formal Latham Garden at Tryon Palace in New Bern.
You'll twist and turn on the brick walking paths to wind your way all through this enchanting maze.
Like most formal gardens, there is a method to the layout. The Latham Garden is a symmetrical shape created by dwarf yaupon holly bushes which are native to the Carolinas. Each is perfectly manicured and trimmed to follow the path of the maze through the garden.
Tryon Palace is a state historic site in which one can easily spend an entire day in awe of the fascinating beauty and history found within.
The expansive attraction includes the Governor's Palace, many historical buildings, the North Carolina History Center — and 16 glorious acres of gardens.
In total, there are 13 different gardens at Tryon Palace and you'll want to see them all...
...Beginning with the formal garden maze.
Most people don't realize that a Gardens Only pass is available at Tryon Palace. For a mere $6, adults can freely explore all of the gardens for as long as desired. (Kids grades 1-12 can get a Gardens Only pass for only $3.)
The Latham Garden, where you'll find the maze, is located just to the rear of the Governor's Palace. Surrounded by brick walls, it feels more like room with the sky for the ceiling.
Among the many twists and turns of the holly shrubs you'll find a variety of seasonal blooms. And statues of each season watch over the garden throughout the year.
The next time you're in or near New Bern, head to Tryon Palace. If you can't budget an entire day to explore everything there is to do at this attraction, then at least plan to spend a morning or afternoon checking out the gardens - and the captivating maze of the formal garden room known as the Latham Garden.
Tickets for all of the attractions at Tryon Palace (including the North Carolina State Museum) are $20/adults and $10/youth grades 1-12. A Gardens Only pass is $6/adults and $3/youth grades 1-12.
