Mt. Mitchell is part of the Black Mountain Range which formed more than a billion years ago. Many animals and plants in the area resemble those of alpine environments.
Hikers love the thrill and challenge Mt. Mitchell offers. You can hike Deep Gap Trail to Mt. Craig, Balsam Trail, or the Mount Mitchell Trail. A good workout - but well worth it!
The campground is open year round. In the park, you'll find amazing plant life, several rare and distinctive.
In the late spring to early summer fresh blooms fill the mountainside in bright colors and the air with a sweet scent.
You might even catch a glimpse at a few rare birds, a flying squirrel or white owl.
Don't forget a jacket since the weather stays 10-30 degrees cooler up here. There's plenty to do, see, and explore at the beatiful Mt. Mitchell! You'll want to make a day or even weekend out of it.
