DuPont State Forest is a nature lover's dream. The 10,473-acres is home to lush forests, breathtaking waterfalls and over 80 miles of hiking trails. One could certainly spend more than a day, but a weekend or even a week exploring all that DuPont has to offer. One trail is simply different from the rest, it allows you to see the most majestic waterfalls DuPont has to offer and could maybe be one of the most hiking trails in North Carolina. There can be sweeping mountain views if you wish, but really, this trail takes you through the heart of mountain terrain and rugged nature in North Carolina.
While DuPont State Forest has a multitude of hikes that circle back together, Hike WNC compiled a great .6-6-mile hike that allows you to see the most of what DuPont State Forest has to offer. It begins with the popular waterfalls hike, a 3-mile hike that takes you to Hooker, Triple, and High Falls. This hike is perfect for families and those who want to get active without something too strenuous, but if you wish, you can continue on the hike to the Covered Bridge over the Little River, Lake Dense, and Bridal Veil Falls for some of the most amazing views in North Carolina.
Take the gated trail to Hooker Falls, bearing left at the first intersection.
The moderate trail takes you through dense forests.
Finally arriving at the 15-foot Hooker Falls.
The mild and beautiful waterfall is a popular swimming hole in the summer and completely beautiful in the fall.
After Hooker Falls, cross over the new wood and steel tail bridge that runs over the Little River.
Turn left and follow the Triple Falls Trail which becomes steep in points but takes you to a great overlook for Triple Falls.
You can also venture to the picnic area for a bite to eat, or take a path down that takes you to the heart, and base, of the falls.
From the Triple Falls Picnic Shelter, take a the 2.0-mile High Falls Trail.
High Falls is a jaw dropping sight, with water sliding down 150-ft.
If you're craving more, continue up the High Falls Trail for an amazing view and overlook of the falls. Use caution when around the fall and when climbing, rocks can be slippery and currents can be dangerous.
To access Lake Dense from High Falls, take the Conservation Road and take a left on Joanna Road. You'll soon be led to Three Lakes Trail, which you take a right in. You'll reach the gorgeous, crystal clear lake with mountain views.
Return to Conservation Road, turn left, and continue to follow the trail along the Little River. After the Lake Julia Dam, you'll reach an intersection with Bridal Veil Falls trail, turn right, and in a 1/2 mile you'll arrive at the breathtaking Bridal Veil Falls.
The 120-ft. waterfall occurs in many angles, even some with flat surfaces for sitting or getting up close.
When water levels aren't too high, you'll be able to walk behind the 10-ft. base of the fall. If the waterfall looks familiar to you, that's because it was featured in the Hunger Games movie.
While the hike is a somewhat long one, it can be broken up into two days, or if you're feeling adventurous, can be done in a day. With diverse scenery and multiple waterfalls, it's one of the most unique and beautiful hikes in North Carolina.
