There is nothing better than taking a hike in the summer and then cooling off in a swimming hole. Actually, we can think of one thing that is maybe better than that: If that swimming hole has a waterfall next to it. Talk about swimming in style! Vernooy Kill Falls in the Catskills is a beautiful, secluded way to cool off this summer. Want to know more? Keep reading below about the best swimming hole in the Catskills.
Vernooy Kill Falls is a four-stage waterfall located in the Sundown Wild Forest, a 30,000-acre wild forest located in the southeast Catskills. The hike takes you through the Cherrytown Mountains and to an amazing waterfall.
At Vernooy Kill Falls, the water drops around 60 feet into a variety of different small pools and falls.
The area below the falls features a 15-20-foot tall stone wall that used to be a part of a mill complex that was functional from the early 1700s until 1809.
You can take Upper Cherrytown Road to get to the parking area to enter the trail. The hike to the falls is roughly 3.5 miles and is considered to be moderately challenging. It takes around two hours to complete each way.
The trail is a bit rocky and also has a bit of an incline, but nothing that should be too challenging for even novice hikers. On the plus side, it has plenty of shade. Your trek will be worth it when you lay your eyes on those falls!
Vernooy Kill Falls makes for an ideal day trip for both Catskills residents and visitors. Dogs are welcome, as long as they are on a leash.
If you are looking to swim surrounded by beautiful scenery in the Catskills this summer, Vernooy Kill Falls is a great choice. You can hike a bit, and then relax near an amazing waterfall. While you are in the Catskills—and maybe even after you are done hiking—why not stop for a replenishing bite at Selena's, a charming restaurant in Haines Falls? And, if you need a place to stay nearby, Sundown BB is an excellent option.
