After a long stretch of cold temperatures we tend to find ourselves itching to use all those vacation days we've saved away for warmer weather. For those of us looking to experience a nice getaway without actually leaving our beautiful state, the Adirondack Mountains may be just the thing for you. Covering more than 3,000 miles, the Adirondack park can be a tricky area to decide exactly where you want to explore and getaway to. If you've had a long week and need to put a pause on life's chaos, escaping away to Lake Placid may be the perfect answer to all your problems.
Below we've figured out a getaway that's equipped with everything a great two day vacation is made of. While you can definitely put your own spin on this and fix it to your exact liking, we think it will give you the perfect break you've been dreaming about. Ready to unwind and have some fun? This 2-day New York getaway is absolutely amazing:
Wake up early and enjoy the scenic drive to Lake Placid where you can devour a delicious breakfast at The Breakfast Club, Etc. before it's time for check in!
That's right, just like your favorite 1980's movie, this restaurant is a total classic. Picking your morning fuel off the menu will prove to be difficult, but a couple of our favorite treats are the French Toast Fondue and their Bacon Bloody Mary's!
Next, check in at the stunning Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort.
Located right on Main Street, steps away from nearly everything you'll need during your getaway, this beautiful resort will give you a magnificent stay. With unforgettable views of Mirror Lake and the surrounding mountains, you'll often find yourself speechless.
After getting settled you can go spend the afternoon exploring at High Falls Gorge.
Less than a fifteen minute drive from the resort, the beautiful waterfalls at High Gorge will fill up your phone and/or camera with gorgeous photos. How could you not want to snap a few shots of this magical place? Over 20 acres of privately owned land are available to explore here and provides the perfect adventure no matter what your age is. Exploring the area generally takes an hour or so and will have you back in the village for lunch!
If you decide to take this getaway after May 21st, you could swap out High Falls Gorge with a visit to the Olympic Jumping Complex!
Depending on how much time you dedicate to High Falls Gorge, you could realistically tackle both of these exciting adventures in one day. Opening back up for the summer season on May 21st, the historic site is an unforgettable way to spend your day. Hosting the Olympics twice, in 1932 and 1980, Lake Placid holds a ton of incredible history. At the complex you can take a tour which will bring you all the way to the top of the Olympic ski jumps by elevator. With panoramic views of the surrounding High Peaks, your mind will be blown.
An afternoon of exploring will leave you hungry and ready for some BBQ at Smoke Signals.
Our residents love a great BBQ spot and Smoke Signals offers just that! After an afternoon of exploring you'll want to fill up and the savory dishes here will rock your tastebuds!
Before you grab dinner and end your first day, explore Main Street and all the amazing shops and boutiques in Lake Placid!
With an assortment of shops just outside the resort, you can explore Main Street and get carried away with a little retail therapy. It's time to treat yourself!
Fill up before bed at The Great Adirondack Steak & Seafood Company.
A local favorite, the food here will definitely never disappoint you! With a great selection of dishes and beverages, you'll go back to your room at night feeling like you may never need to eat again.
Day 2: Before you have to check out of the resort, walk down to Big Mountain Deli and Creperie to get your morning started.
Is your mouth watering yet? No matter which crepe you decide to go with, you can't go wrong. While we suggest this place for breakfast, there's also no denying that it's just as good of a lunch spot as well. This menu is unique, offering 46 sandwiches that are all named after New York's High Peaks!
Speaking of High Peaks, guess what adventure is planned for Day 2?
This part of your getaway is fun because there are literally handfuls of options for you to choose from. Visiting Lake Placid puts you right in the middle of all our gorgeous High Peaks, letting you choose from a variety of mountains, all giving you unbelievable views.
While Cascade & Porter Mountain is a quick drive from where you're staying, you could also take the drive up to Whiteface as well.
A more popular spot to visit compared to some of our more remote High Peaks, Whiteface Mountain gives you the option of reaching High Peaks without doing a whole lot of climbing. While visitors can choose to hike up to the top, some also decide to drive up the mountain and walk up through its exciting tunnel!
Depending on which mountain you decide to explore, you'll most likely be packing a lunch to eat at a summit. But if you find yourself in town for lunch, stop by The Cottage!
Soak up the sun and enjoy the view while dining at The Cottage. The American style menu is always appealing, our favorite dish being their delicious flat bread pizzas!
If you end up eating lunch on the mountain, make sure to grab dinner at Jimmy's 21 when you get back from your adventure!
Lakeside dining and amazing Italian food. What could be better? Homemade pasta and flavorful dishes will quench your big appetite after spending the day taking on one of our huge mountains.
Or perhaps after a long day you just desire a local beverage from Lake Placid Pub & Brewery to help cool you off!
In the mood for an adult drink and some fried pickles or maybe something doused in cheese? Aren't we always.
Not ready to go home just yet? Slow things down and enjoy a movie at the Palace Theatre.
Conclude your two day bliss with some down time at the movies. The building is from the 1920's and is a great place to visit.
Wave goodbye to Main Street and drive off with the sunset as you plan your next trip to come back!
