You May Not Like These Predictions About New Mexico’s Wet Winter This Year

Get out your duck boots, New Mexico. This winter is going to be wet, at least according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. The stalwart farm publication just released its predictions for the 2017-2018 winter season. By the way, don't doubt the Old Farmer's Almanac. Traditionally, the publication's weather predictions have been 80 accurate.

As we move toward winter, here's what's in store for New Mexico's three weather regions.

Love our spectacular New Mexico skies when it rains?

Good thing. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the rain is going to hang around a while, all across the state. This means fall t-storms and a wet winter.

DESERT SOUTHWEST - This fall, most of the state will experience a little more rain than usual.

Albuquerque, Farmington, Las Cruces, Roswell, and Santa Fe, this means you. If you're wanting some worry-free outside time, though, mid-September looks sunny and warm. Overall, look for temperatures in the low 80s, moving to the high 70s.

Come winter, it's going to be colder than usual in the desert southwest, with a bit of snow.

For perspective, remember the fall will have been "colder" too, but not by a lot. The coldest weather should hit around the end of November, with a brief respite in mid-December. Then it will be cold again. Look for a white Christmas (in our state's traditional snowy regions) and a chilly New Year.

NEW MEXICO PLAINS – Fall showers and thundershowers continue in the northeastern part of New Mexico too.

No worries though, right Clayton, Clovis, Portales, Raton, Tucumcari? Rainfall will be about average. Besides, this is New Mexico. If it does rain, we'll still have sunny skies. Also, the rain will cool things down. Starting in September, look for a seasonal dip in temperature. However, you won't need a jacket yet.

Could be this winter folks in the plains area won't even need a heavy jacket; just something for rain.

It's going to warmer than usual. Plus, it looks like a bit of moisture could be in store. Like your neighbors to the west, cooler temps come in late November and last to just after New Year. Look for a warmer spell in mid-December. However, cooler temperatures return before the end of the month.

SOUTHEAST REGION – Eunice, Hobbs, Jal, and Lovington, fall could mean rain for you too.

This region will be markedly warmer than the rest of the state. While precipitation will be less than average, don't be surprised if some thunderstorm action sneaks in before fall ends.

Southeast, cool and wet is the name of your winter.

Wet is good, right? But, again "more" moisture is relative. It will be colder than normal. Falling in line with the other New Mexico regions, look for a slight rise in temperatures mid-December until the end of the month.

Are you ready for New Mexico winter? If the Farmer’s Almanac proves true, it might be soggy but you’ll have plenty of time to take some winter hikes and enjoying our seasonal festivals. Just have a jacket around and keep your feet dry.
