While the Land of Enchantment is full to the brim with many natural wonders, this park just west of Carrizozo is home to lava beds that were left behind after a volcano erupted over 5,000 years ago. From far away, the park looks desolate, but when you get up close and out on the trails you'll see six miles of lava flow throughout dozens of flowers and cacti that you'll only find in New Mexico. Keep your eyes peeled for animals, and if you're a bird lover, you're in for a real treat. This park near Carrizozo might not look like much from a distance, but once you explore it within, your jaw will fall to the floor.
Welcome to Valley of Fires Recreation Area!
This jaw-dropping park provides access to the Carrizozo Malpais lava flow. On the northern part of the Tularosa Basin, you'll find the remnants of a volcano that erupted over 5,000 years ago.
When Little Black Peak erupted so long ago, the molten lava traveled over 40 miles to the basin where it filled with lava. Now, you can get up close and personal with what's left behind.
The main trail through Valley of Fires is the Malpais Nature Trail, which is fully accessible.
This paved trail will take you throughout the park with interpretive signs along the way. Here you'll see many different flowers and trees along the way.
The park is also home to numerous animals, so don't be surprised if you come across bats, deer, sheep, lizards, and so much more. Valley of Fires is also an impeccable site for birdwatching.
If you'd like to stay and experience this natural phenomenon all night, there are also 19 campsites in the park. Some even have RV hookups.
