Once in a while, we could all use a little adventure. Not only can it get us out of a rut in our lives but it can satisfy any wanderlust we may be feeling. If you're in the market for a small-town adventure in New Mexico, how about a hike through a lava field followed by some coffee and treats at a local cafe?
We'll start this adventure at the Valley of Fires Recreation Area where you'll be able to hike through ancient lava beds. Formed by the eruption of Little Black Peak over 5,000 years ago, this park is absolutely awe-inspiring.
Tullarosa Basin's lava flow covers a 125-square-mile area and is 160 feet thick. It's quite an otherworldly place to explore.
Take a walk along the nature trail through the lava field and you'll find a surprising number of flora and fauna as well. You'll see flowers, trees, cacti, birds, and more. You'll be utterly fascinated by all you see in the Valley of Fires.
After working up an appetite exploring lava fields, it's time to head into town for some treats. And the best place to do that in Carrizozo is Honey Girl's Cafe!
Honey Girl's Cafe is a charming cafe located in Corrizozo's historic district. It serves gourmet coffees, teas, pastries, and lunch items.
One of the most popular drinks here is called the Valley of Fire, which would be perfect to order after exploring the Valley of Fires. This drink has chocolate, cinnamon, and habanero which make for quite an interesting combination of flavors.
Whether you want something sweet like an ube, oreo, and nutella babka or something savory like black forest ham and cheese on croissant, everything here is delicious!
Honey Girl's Cafe is open Thursday through Sunday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., so plan your trip accordingly.
