The Can’t-Miss New Mexico Hike for Every Nature Lover’s Bucket List

Have you ever visited the Petroglyph National Monument in Albuquerque, New Mexico? With over 7,200 acres of high desert landscape, archaeological sites, petroglyphs, and five volcanic cones, the landscape here is vast and unique. It's also an inexpensive day trip destination as there is no fee to visit this national monument. And if you want to hike while you're here, there are four trails, the best of which is The Volcanoes Trail, a trail I believe belongs on everyone's New Mexico hiking bucket list.

Whether you're making an escape from the city of Albuquerque or you're taking a day trip, Petroglyph National Monument is a fascinating park to explore. First of all, a volcanic basalt escarpment runs through the landscape making it an utterly unique place to explore. And then there are the petroglyphs left behind by ancient Native Americans and Spanish explorers that you can view on rocks throughout the monument.

The Volcanoes Trail, which I highly urge you to take upon your visit to the monument, is a 3-mile loop with views of the Rio Grande Valley and Albuquerque in the distance as well as the Sandia Mountains. It's an easy trail you can even bring your dog or kids on. However, there is no shade, so please bring sun protection like a hat and/or sunscreen as well as plenty of water. This trail also makes a for a great winter hike so keep that in mind if you need something to do with the kids during their winter breaks.

This trail also leads through fascinating rock formations including some that were left behind by the area's volcanoes back when they were active. In addition, the trail leads to the top of the volcanic cones along the way. How cool is that?
