New Mexico is full of natural wonders, from colorful canyons to glacial lakes and abundant forests. Santa Fe National Forest in particular contains a whopping 1,002 miles of trails and more than 620 miles of lakes and streams. It’s a stunningly diverse landscape, with lush meadows, mountains, and even a dormant volcano within its 1.6 million acres. With so many trails to choose from, it can be hard to figure out where to start your trek – but look no further. Black Canyon Trail Santa Fe is an easy, 1.5-mile forest trail in New Mexico that offers even novice hikers a chance to experience some of our state's most magnificent wilderness.
About seven miles northeast of the city of Santa Fe, Black Canyon Trail begins and ends at Black Canyon Campground.
You’ll make your way through the campground to find the trailhead, and then travel up a gentle incline. As you hike through a grove of aspen, pine, and fir trees, enjoy the shade provided by the thick coniferous forest.
Black Canyon Campground rests at an elevation of 8475 feet, so if you’re looking for mountain scenery, you’re in the right place. Don’t forget to pause and take in the views along your hike. It just might be the best hiking trail in NM!
The trail is beautiful at any time of year, but in the spring and summer, you’ll find Black Canyon Trail bursting with wildflowers. And where there are wildflowers, there are butterflies, so keep your camera ready to capture these flashes of color.
Be sure to also keep an eye out for local wildlife as you hike. Elk, mule deer, black bears, mountain lions, and bighorn sheep all call the Santa Fe National Forest home, not to mention an impressive variety of birds.
