The New Jersey Park That Rivals America’s National Parks

Our national parks are incredible, but don't overlook this lesser-known hidden gem in New Jersey, with an enchanting botanical garden, rugged hiking trails, and scenic waterways.

While millions of people flock to our national parks each year, some of us would rather escape those crowds for a more intimate experience in nature, like what you can find at a stunning state park in New Jersey. Don’t get me wrong, Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park is worth a visit. After all, seeing the 77-foot Great Falls, one of the largest waterfalls by volume east of the Mississippi, is nothing short of mesmerizing. But in my opinion, a trip to Ringwood State Park tucked inside the Ramapo Mountains will take your breath away, too.

Not only does this haven of a New Jersey state park feature lovely gardens, historical landmarks, tranquil waterways, and spectacular views, but it also has miles of rugged trails to enjoy. If you want to skip the crowds and possibly have hiking trails to yourself, this underrated state park in New Jersey should be at the top of your list — at least, I think so!

Why This State Park In New Jersey Is Worth The Visit

You can find the 4,400-acre Ringwood State Park on the northeast border of the state line, just 20 miles north of Paterson. But what’s so special about this state park? Well, the outdoor playground has something for history buffs, nature lovers, and outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy. And I can give you several reasons why this incredible park is worth a trip. For instance, Ringwood is the only state park in New Jersey with a botanical garden as well as two mansions within its borders.

Top Things To Do Inside The Park

The 96-acre sanctuary is lined with peaceful walking paths, water installations, sculptures, beautiful seasonal blooms, and Skylands Manor, a dreamy Tudor-style castle, perfect for fairytale weddings and events. History Buffs will also love Ringwood Manor, a 51-room mansion designated as a National Historic Landmark. Both mansions are open for tours; however, Ringwood Manor is currently undergoing some restoration efforts, so tours are limited.

Aside from the botanical gardens and historical mansions, Ringwood is brimming with some of the best hiking trails in New Jersey. Its location inside the Ramapo Mountains offers breathtaking views and rugged paths. Hikers and bikers of all levels will find multi-use trails to explore. Here are two of the best hiking trails at Ringwood State Park:

  • Avid hikers, create your own adventure along the 9-mile Ringwood State Park Loop that meanders through dense forests with scenic overlooks. There are several connecting trails, fantastic for mountain biking, too.
  • For an easy, kid-friendly, and dog-friendly hike, check out the two-mile Cooper Union Loop featuring rock scrambling and breathtaking views of the Wanaque Reservoir.

What’s more, the hiking trails have some surprises along the way, including pretty waterfalls, massive rock outcroppings, a cemetery, multiple waterways, and more. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for them. Of course, wildlife here is plentiful, so be on the lookout for the animals who call this park home. I’d also recommend downloading AllTrails+ for easy navigation inside the park.

One of the highlights of the park is Shephard Lake, a 74-acre natural spring-fed oasis that might just be Jersey’s best-kept secret. The lake is great for water activities, including boating, fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and seasonal swimming. If you don’t have a watercraft, you can easily rent one at the Shepherd Lake Boathouse. But that’s not all! Soak up the views of the pretty blue waters along the 2-mile Shepherd Lake Loop, and when you’re done, find a waterfront spot and have a lovely picnic. Nothing beats an afternoon of fun by the water.

Best Times Of Year To Visit This New Jersey Destination

The park is wonderful, no matter the season. In summer and spring, the gardens are lush, with vibrant blooms, and are simply magical. Of course, in fall, the trails are blazing with autumn beauty, so leaf peepers will not be disappointed. In winter, the park transforms into an enchanting wonderland with snow-covered trails, great for cold-weather fun.
