Pedal Around a Nature Preserve in New Jersey on a Converted Rail Trail

Rail bike through Cape May's Garrett Family Preserve, where marsh views, wildlife, and scenic adventure await.

New Jersey offers us countless ways to get out and appreciate the great outdoors. From hiking trails to waterways to little-known natural wonders, the Garden State is tailor-made for nature enthusiasts. And today's feature adventure is one that will take your appreciation to a whole new level: rail biking.

So, what exactly is rail biking? It's an exciting, immersive activity that involves riding pedal-powered machines along inactive railroad tracks. It's like biking, but cooler. Rail bike systems are located across the country, repurposing abandoned railroad tracks to create scenic cycling routes. Come along as we show you where to enjoy a scenic ride around an actual nature preserve when you try rail biking in New Jersey.

Where You'll Find New Jersey's Rail Bike Trail

New Jersey's rail bike trail can be found at the beautiful Garrett Family Preserve at Cape Island Creek. Characterized by lovely salt marshes and ever-changing tides, this stunning landscape is a haven for butterflies, migrating songbirds, and, of course, nature lovers. Throughout the years, The Nature Conservancy has added various amenities for visitors, including a bird blind, artists' easels, and a picnic pavilion. But, in our opinion, one of the most unique ways to travel through this marshy, flower-filled landscape is by pedaling through it! Enter: rail biking in New Jersey, operated by Revolution Rail Co.

What To Expect On This Rail Bike Adventure

Revolution Rail Co.'s four-mile run at Cape May will last about an hour and a half. The former railway route will take you past creeks and salt marshes, through wildflower fields, and alongside green, grassy meadows. You will really enjoy the scenic views! Each rail bike is pedal-powered, meaning you'll be able to tour the route at your leisure. In fact, it's encouraged to go at a slower pace so you can enjoy the sights along the way. As a picturesque, peaceful Cape May excursion, it's a wonderful way to enjoy wildlife. You'll likely spot a wide variety of songbirds, raptors, bumblebees, and butterflies.

Who Is This Adventure Suitable For?

alt

This relaxing journey is suitable for riders of most ages and ability levels. The rail bikes can accommodate up to four riders. There is a physical component to rail biking, but the rule of thumb is that if you can comfortably walk for an hour and a half, you will be in good shape to rail bike for that same length of time. Children ages four and up can ride on their own, with seatbelts. Children under age four can ride in a front-mounted carrier.

You can find more information, FAQs, and reservations (which are highly recommended, by the way) on the official Revolution Rail Co. website. During peak season, confirm their regular hours to ensure this journey will work well with your vacation schedule. They also offer rides on a reduced schedule in the spring and fall. You may even come across wintertime slots! No matter your motivation, you'll be glad you tried this unique rail bike experience in New Jersey. Prefer to explore on foot? No problem—here's one of the loveliest trails in the preserve for you to hike.
