The bay beaches of Cape May, New Jersey are home to countless treasures. Not only can you find sea glass, shells, sharks' teeth, and beautiful quartz stones known as Cape May Diamonds, but the area is also known to have arrowheads. You can find them in the sand near Sunset and Higbee Beaches on the Higbee Beach Loop Trail. It is important to preserve these historic artifacts, so remember to admire but not remove them. If you decide to visit Higbee Beach, why not make an adventure out of it and journey along the Higbee Beach Loop Trail? It's often called one of the best trails in New Jersey.
The 2.9-mile loop trail is short, sweet, and scenic. Just be sure to wear proper shoes for walking through the sand.
The trail offers diverse scenery including lake and bay views, marshes, meadows, and woodlands. It is best enjoyed from March-October.
Owned by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, it's a popular place for wildlife watching. Leashed dogs are permitted.
Fall is one of the best times to spot migrating birds and butterflies. There are many species to be found across the various landscapes along the trail.
Whatever time of year you visit, you have the chance to spot prehistoric and Native American artifacts including arrowheads.
Arrowheads vary in appearance and may be made of bone and stones including quartz. Keep an eye out!
One of the best places to stumble upon arrowheads along the trail is right on the beach.
It's believed that thousands of arrowheads have been found over the years, though no exact number is known. Low tide is one of the best times to spot an arrowhead!

Many of the arrowheads in this area are black, dark brown, or charcoal grey. They are often along the waterline but can be anywhere. Most are believed to have originated with the Lenni-Lenape Tribe and date back hundreds and even thousands of years. They're part of New Jersey history and should be left where they are found so that others can enjoy them for years to come. If you want to guarantee a local arrowhead sighting, you can visit the Cape May County Museum. They have a wonderful collection!
