This Is the Most Claustrophobic Hike in Nevada—Would You Try It?

Be prepared for red rock views, wildlife sightings, and incredible slot canyons.

Anyone who is searching for a trail that offers a variety of quests through tight spaces will love the Anniversary Narrows Trail. This claustrophobic hike in Nevada offers red rocks, beautiful views, and unforgettable slot canyons. It's breathtaking and unforgettable. This is one of those hikes that will stay with you forever. Read on to learn more about it.

If you're visiting southern Nevada and want to tackle a challenging hike that is quite different from many others, head to Lake Mead National Recreation Area to explore the Anniversary Narrows Trail. This is an eight-mile loop trail that's not easy; it'll take you most of the day to complete. Along the way, you'll experience more than 1,400 feet of elevation gain as you summit a peak, pass through canyons, enjoy beautiful vistas, scramble over boulders, and even check out the entrance of an abandoned mine.

The slot canyons along this trail are a huge draw. They are tall, narrow, and beautiful. If you're claustrophobic, you may feel a little tense when passing through them, but their beauty will likely distract you enough to keep you moving forward on the trail.

Depending on the time of year, you may have to wade through some water, so come prepared with extra hiking gear. In general, however, the trail is easy to follow through the slot canyons, but some hikers have found other areas of the trail poorly marked. We recommend downloading a map before you go, as cell phone service is spotty in this area. Fortunately, other hikers often leave rock cairns to help others stay on the trail, so keep an eye out for them. And, since this area can be extremely hot, be sure to bring plenty of drinking water along with you—you're going to need it.

This trail is long and quite challenging in parts, so you'll want to wear sturdy hiking shoes for your safety. Hiking poles might be a good aid as well if you have them. Parts of this trail are nearly vertical, or the terrain is comprised of gravel or sand, so you need to be prepared for anything.

You'll also find the entrance to an abandoned mine along this trail. The Anniversary Mine was used to mine borax in the 1920s. Hikers are advised to stay out of the mine for safety reasons, but the entrance offers unique photo opportunities from the outside.

There's also a good chance that you'll see some wildlife along this trail. On very hot days, most creatures will be hiding in the shade, but at dawn, dusk, or on cooler days, you may encounter bighorn sheep, mule deer, desert tortoise, snakes, coyotes, hawks, eagles, and other birds. In fact, over 240 different species of birds have been recorded in Lake Mead Recreation Area, along with 41 different types of reptiles and 19 species of bats.

This trail is an excellent choice for experienced hikers seeking a challenge and who may be looking to discover something new and interesting. The canyons, mine, wildlife, and rock formations along the Anniversary Narrows Trail are spectacular and impress anyone who chooses to tackle this journey. This trail isn't easy, but it's absolutely worth the time and effort.

Dogs are allowed on this trail, but you must keep your pup on a leash. Also, there's a per-car fee to enter Lake Mead National Recreation Area, but you're sure to find it reasonable and worth it after experiencing this incredible trail.

You'll love the Anniversary Narrows Trail. It may trigger your claustrophobia in some sections, but you're sure to find this adventure well worth it. Give it a try, and happy trails to you!
