This Scenic Nevada Trail Is Even Better in the Winter

Grab your snowshoes to explore the spectacular wintry scene on this short but epic Nevada hike with an adorable surprise along the way.

What is your favorite time of year to explore the great outdoors? Some of us prefer fall, where every adventure feels magical as the season glows with autumn hues. Winter is equally enchanting when the snowy landscapes turn every outdoor activity into memorable moments. No matter what season you enjoy, there are hiking trails in Nevada that will satisfy the outdoor enthusiast in you.

But there is something truly enticing about hiking the Chickadee Ridge via Tahoe Rim Trail near Incline Village in the snowy season. With picture-perfect views, tons of wildlife, and unlimited winter activities, it’s easy to see why we selected this trek as the top winter hike in Nevada. Grab your snowshoes and trekking poles (you’ll need them) and come see why this is arguably the most scenic winter trail in Nevada.

What is Chickadee Ridge?

I would describe Chickadee Ridge as an outdoor wonderland with awe-inspiring views of Lake Tahoe. At 8,000 feet above sea level, the scene here is simply breathtaking, and the hike is a favorite of locals and visitors alike. The trail is great at any time of year. During the warmer seasons, the meadows are lush, featuring flowing streams and pretty little wildflowers. But the area truly comes alive during the colder months when the snowy meadows along the ridge glisten under sunlight, making the wintry landscapes pure magic.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the ridge is that it got its name from the quirky little chickadees that live in the mountains. These adorable creatures are known to fly into your hands for a quick snack. So, not only is this ridge a fun destination for adventurers, but bird lovers will fall in love with it, too.

Where is Chickadee Ridge Trail?

Inside the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest in the Tahoe Meadows area, you’ll find the shared trailhead. The parking lot is located right off Mt. Rose Highway, about 15 miles outside of Incline Village. Although there is no official trailhead for Chickadee Ridge, the trail shares the same access as the Tahoe Meadows Trailhead.

Cruising to the trailhead is an adventure on its own. Expect a peaceful, scenic drive winding through the Sierra Nevada with stunning views of Lake Tahoe in the beginning. As you ascend through the forest, the area will be surrounded by towering pine trees, which are especially pretty after a fresh snowfall. Talk about a winter wonderland! Once you get to the large Alpine meadow, you’ll see parking along the street.

Exploring This Winter Wonderland

For a short hike, adventurers will be rewarded in the most magical way. Only two miles long, this out-and-back trail will take no more than two hours to complete. Since it’s part of the Tahoe Rim Trail, a 200-mile multi-use network that circles Lake Tahoe, the area is popular for mountain bikers, horseback riders, and hikers.

In the winter months, the landscapes are filled with snowshoers, skiers, sledders, and hikers. The trail is easy to follow, and because of heavy snowfall, you’ll see the pathways of other hikers as you trek. You’ll gain about 300 feet in elevation to get to the ridge that overlooks Lake Tahoe. On the way, expect dense pine forests covered in fluffy white powdery snow, and prepare to be awestruck by the sweeping views from the top of the ridge. Seeing Lake Tahoe surrounded by snow-capped mountains and evergreens is a dreamy scene that you won’t forget.

While the overlook is the main reason to visit, the chickadees add so much joy to this winter hiking adventure. Bring the kids and dog along to interact with the playful little birds. You’ll notice them along the trail as they dart from tree to tree. Many hikers come here to feed them, and although it’s not highly recommended, if you do feed the chickadees, be sure to use ONLY birdseeds. Human food can be harmful to these delicate creatures. Aside from the chickadees, you might see some adorable chipmunks along the way.

Between the stunning overlook of Lake Tahoe, the playful wildlife, and the endless outdoor activities, it’s easy to see why this scenic trail is one of the best winter hikes in Nevada.
