Saddle Rock Trail Is A Low-Key Nebraska Hike That Has An Amazing Payoff
Saddle Rock Trail at Scotts Bluff National Monument offers a scenic and beginner-friendly hiking experience in Nebraska.
Hiking is a fantastic way to explore more of our beautiful state while getting some great exercise. But for those who are beginners or not in top shape, it can be pretty daunting. Fortunately, Nebraska has plenty of hiking trails that are wonderful for the novice hiker and experts alike. The Saddle Rock Trail is one of those spots.
The Saddle Rock Trail is located at the Scotts Bluff National Monument near the city of Gering.
The trail runs from the Visitor Center to the summit of Scotts Bluff, and every step is incredibly scenic.
The trail is easy to find, especially since Scotts Bluff is a national monument.
The trailhead is located east of the Visitor Center.
For the first third of this hike, you'll travel across the prairie to Scott’s Spring on level ground.
The trail is only about three miles long in its entirety, and the incline is nice and steady.
The trail is well-marked and paved the entire way, so you won't have to worry about getting lost on this hike.
However, if you're a beginner, it's always good to bring a more experienced friend or two, at least at first.
The second third of the hike ascends up to a foot tunnel, which you'll pass through to continue.
Don't worry. It's extremely short.
Eventually, you'll reach the last third of the trail and the bluff.
The bluff is the result of eroding sediment layers, which are preserved by the caprock sections which still protect the softer sandstone, siltstone, and volcanic ash below.
The Saddle Rock Trail is one of Nebraska's most low key hikes, but it is not without its visual reward.
While this area is occasionally closed after rock falls or due to weather conditions, it is open year-round.
Happy hiking, Nebraska!
