Take A Paved Loop Trail Around This Nebraska Lake For A Peaceful Adventure

Flanagan Lake in Omaha offers a scenic 5.2-mile loop trail perfect for walking, jogging, and biking, with amenities like playgrounds and kayak launch sites.

Flanagan Lake, located on the very northwestern edge of Omaha, was opened in 2018. Since its inception, it's been a popular place for walkers, joggers, cyclists, and anyone who wants to get out and enjoy nature. Although it's in a residential area and near some busy streets, the atmosphere on the trail is calm - and there are endless scenic places to explore.

When you just need a quick getaway to recharge and reconnect with nature, Flanagan Lake is the perfect place to do it.

This flood control reservoir features a 220-acre lake and more than 700 acres of recreational space.

The recreational area contains a playground, picnic shelters, restrooms, kayak launch sites, and plenty of parking.

But it's the trail that draws most visitors in. The 5.2-mile loop trail takes you around the lake and promises beautiful scenery no matter the season.

The trail is considered easy as it is paved and contains no hills or challenging spots. People using wheelchairs, strollers, or mobility equipment should have no problems navigating it.

The scenic walk will give you some time to reflect. Flanagan Lake is a popular trail for walking, jogging, and biking, but if you visit at a less busy time - a weekday morning, for example - you'll find almost no traffic on the path.

As you make your way along the length of the trail, you'll see several fun and creative benches. They not only give you a place to sit and rest, but they also provide a bit of whimsy.

Kids will especially enjoy sights like this silly frog bench. It's likely that you'll run into some actual wildlife on the trail, too. Waterfowl, small mammals, and even a few toads (in the right season, of course) make regular appearances around the lake.

Flanagan Lake is also popular with canoeists and kayakers. If you prefer to do your sightseeing via the water, you'll find solitude on the lake along with some incredible sights.

The loop trail actually consists of two loops that can be traversed separately or together. One is just over three miles and the other is around two miles.

Be sure to wear plenty of sunscreen and bring ample drinking water when you walk this easy trail. This is a wide-open space with very little shade. The Flanagan Lake Trail is open all year. Pets are welcome as long as they are kept leashed at all times. Find Flanagan Lake at 168th & Fort Street in Omaha.
