Niobrara Is an Underrated Nebraska State Park That Will Impress You This Fall

If you’re in the market for a fantastic fall trip, check out Nebraska’s Niobrara State Park for great colors, starry skies, and plenty of history

I love spending time outdoors in the fall. The air is crisp, the temperature is just right, and everything is full of color. If you’re in Nebraska this season and searching for the perfect outdoor retreat, look no further, as I have the perfect spot that you’ve been looking for.

Niobrara State Park is located at the confluence of the Niobrara and Missouri Rivers, right on the border of South Dakota. The park gets its name from the Ponca language and means "running water" or "wide waters," a reference to the diverging rivers. The park is a vista of rolling plains that seems to go on forever, and in the autumn, the grass changes to a brilliant, golden-yellow, which is really something to see.

If you’re stopping by, I recommend heading straight for the J. Alan Cramer Interpretive Center, which offers a great history of the land, as well as a view of the entire park. Plan out the rest of your trip here with the help of a knowledgeable park ranger.

In the summer, this park can get pretty hot, so for our hikers out there, the cooler weather that the fall season offers is perfect for those long walks. There are fourteen miles of trail available for the adventurous, and plenty of nice, easy trails for those of us who prefer a gentle romp through nature.

The most popular trail is the Niobrara Loop Trail, a 1.6-mile loop that takes a little less than an hour to complete. This simple trail delivers landscape views along a wide, well-maintained path. If you keep your eyes peeled, you might catch wild turkeys, beavers, or some white-tailed deer.

A somewhat longer option is the Deer Creek Trail, a 2.4-mile loop that’s highly recommended during the fall season. The route can also be treated as a choose-your-own-adventure type of trail, as there are multiple paths that one can take.

Those interested in spending the night can either sleep under the stars at the family campgrounds or rent one of the wood cabins that are available. Some of the cabins even have telescopes available to rent, as this part of Nebraska offers exceptional stargazing. With minimal light pollution, you can wander outside and see thousands of stars twinkling overhead. If you’re especially lucky, this part of Nebraska is also known for exhibiting the northern lights, so if it’s a clear, moonless night, you just might see the Aurora Borealis.

Beyond hiking, the park also offers horseback riding, fishing, backpacking, and lots of ranger-led programs. With lots to do, Niobrara is a great park for spending an afternoon or even a weekend this fall.
