There’s Almost Nothing in Life a Day on Nebraska’s Niobrara River Can’t Cure
Whether you're in a tube, in a tank, in a canoe, or just splashing around, the Niobrara River is the best place to spend a calm Nebraska day.
Spending time on a river is nothing short of therapeutic. The gentle, steady movement of water paired with a wide-open sky is a quintessential Nebraska experience, and nowhere is that truer than the Niobrara National Scenic River. Whether you're stressed, overwhelmed, or simply in need of a little inspiration, we'd argue there's almost nothing some time on this magnificent river can't fix.
Where Is the Niobrara River?
Niobrara National Scenic River is nestled in the Sandhills of north-central Nebraska. It covers more than 560 miles in total, but it's the relatively small stretch near Valentine that's most prized among river enthusiasts. Unlike the wild and moody Missouri River and the lovely but impossibly shallow Platte River, the Niobrara offers a calm, peaceful experience. It passes through Smith Falls State Park, home to Nebraska's tallest waterfall, and under the iconic Cowboy Trail.
The Best Ways to Experience the Niobrara River
Lovely year-round, the river is considered to be Nebraska's ultimate summer escape, combining relaxation and adventure all in one beautiful experience. Stretches of warm days are perfect for floating along the river at a leisurely pace, enjoying all the sensory details along the way.
Tubing is, of course, the most popular way to enjoy this national scenic river. Grab an inner tube, slather on the sunscreen, and enjoy a leisurely float down this slow-moving waterway. If you want the most Nebraskan experience possible, tanking may be right up your alley. You can rent a stock tank and enjoy a safe, fun day on the water. Outfitters all along the river are available to coordinate a tanking, tubing, canoeing, or kayaking adventure, including equipment rental. These outfitters will also help coordinate your shuttle so you can easily get back to where you parked. Most trips last at least three hours, and some can go twice as long, so be sure to bring along some friends to keep you company.
Prefer sticking to dry land? No problem — there are plenty of beautiful hikes that feature the river. A local favorite is the Niobrara Northern Loop, a 4.9-mile circuit that offers lovely views of the river paired with stretches through the woods and open fields.
Wildlife And Scenery You Will Spot Along the River
The absolutely incredible scenery is the highlight of any Niobrara River trip. In the Valentine area, the river runs through the Niobrara Valley Preserve and the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge. Some parts of the river abut private land, so be aware of your surroundings when you pull over for a break. Another reason to experience the river is the magnificent wildlife you'll spot. Animals you might see along the river include whooping cranes, bald eagles, and peregrine falcons. The unique ecosystem of the Niobrara Valley helps support these populations, some of which are considered endangered.
No matter what's happening in your daily life, you're sure to find the inner peace you're seeking when you spend a day on the river. Plentiful campgrounds dot the land on both sides of the river, so you'll never be at a loss for a place to sleep if you're looking for a multi-day adventure. Before your excursion, be sure to check the weather and river conditions so you can plan accordingly. And don't forget to take just a little bit of a detour to see the tallest waterfall in Nebraska — it's worth the side trip!
