The Stunning 7-Mile Trail in Nebraska’s Platte River State Park Worth the Challenge

If you're looking for a challenging hike to test your skills, look no further. This is the perfect trail for you.

Every now and again, you’ve got to really challenge yourself to see what you’re made of. All of the best things in life require intense effort, so why not some of the best hikes, too? If you’re getting off a stressful week at work and need some sun and good old-fashioned physical activity, I've got the perfect hike for you.

At 7.6 miles, this trail comprises three separate hiking trails that combine to form an ultimate trek. Combining Ruthie’s Backyard, the Pumptrack, and the Eastbound and Down Trail, this loop is something special. And located within the Platte River State Park in Nebraska, which is situated between the state’s two largest cities, Lincoln and Omaha, this park has everything you might need. You can enjoy charming cabins, tons of trails, waterfalls, bike trails, and two observation towers that offer stunning views of the Platte River Basin.

The hike passes the Platte River, Stone Creek Falls, and Jenny Lake, allowing you to see waterfalls, dams, and the historic river itself. The Platte River is one of the most significant tributary systems in the watershed of the Missouri River. Its name comes from the French fur traders who were traveling west, and who initially called it the Nebraskier, a transliteration of the name given by the Otoe people, meaning “flat water,” which is close to the French words “riviere platte,” or “flat river.”

The challenge comes from the elevation changes and significant length. I mean, let’s be honest, seven miles can be a lot for some people, myself included, so make sure to bring lots of water, some good snacks, and prepare to take some nice, long breaks. This hike will probably take the whole day if you're more of a leisure hiker like me.

Two other important things to note before setting out for adventure. One, bring a good amount of bug spray. You’ll be around bodies of water for most of the journey, and bugs will try to get you—don’t let them. Two, the trail can be a bit confusing at times, so download the map onto your phone ahead of time to prevent the chance of getting lost. We don’t want the hike to be any longer than it’s already advertised.

With waterfalls, plenty of flora, and a chance to see a turkey or two, this Nebraska trail is an absolute blast. We all need to push ourselves every once in a while, especially in terms of exercising, so why not make it a fun adventure? If you’re looking for a way to detox from being online all week, or just want to spend as much time as you can outdoors this weekend, check out this trail for a challenge that’s tough, but so worth it.
