Teeming With Adventure, There Are Actually 6 Bodies Of Water At Wakonda State Park In Missouri

Wakonda State Park in Missouri offers a variety of outdoor activities, including swimming, fishing, and hiking, centered around its six lakes.

We can find adventure in so many places in Missouri that sometimes it’s tough to know where to start. Should we go to our favorite amusement park and ride the coasters? Or should we flip and fly at our local trampoline park? Or, better still, how about heading to Wakonda State Park in La Grange, Missouri? Teeming with adventure, it even has six lakes.

Even though it is home to six lakes, Wakonda State Park is arguably best known for Wakonda Lake, a spectacular 20,000-square-foot lake that draws visitors in droves during the summer.

One of the largest sandy beaches in Missouri, the shore leading into Wakonda Lake is perfect for an afternoon of sunbathing or a few games of beach volleyball.

While Wakonda Lake may be most popular with swimmers, there are five more lakes – Jasper, Agate, Granite, Quartz, and Boulder – to check out, too.

Fancy a bit of fishing? Cast your line at one of the six lakes that’s home to a variety of fish, including bluegill, catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass.

Spanning more than 1,000 acres, Wakonda State Park offers a lot to see, and you’ll find no better way to explore than on one of its hiking or water trails. How about starting with a water trail?

Pictured above is Jasper Lake.

Of the three water trails – Jasper, Agate, and Wakonda – the longest Agate is 4.25 miles. Explore the Agate Water Trail by boat, kayak, or canoe. The trail leads past a sand prairie and is ideal for spotting wildlife.

However, if you prefer to start a bit slower, set off on the two-mile Jasper Water Trail. The easy loop trail usually takes about an hour to complete and is popular with wildlife watchers.

The multi-loop Wakonda water trail, also considered easy, tallies 3.7 miles and, like the Agate Trail, passes the sand prairie.

While the lakes are the shining stars of the Missouri state park, you’ll find plenty more to do, too, from biking to picnicking. The kiddos will have a blast at the playground near Wakonda Beach, too.
