Adventure’s Calling: This Beach Trail Is Ideal for Beachcombing in Mississippi
Soak up the sun in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, a quaint Gulf Coast town brimming with shells and seaside charm.
A peaceful stroll on the beach can be part meditation, part treasure hunt. That's especially true if you happen to visit Mississippi's Bay St. Louis Beach, where ample seashells wash up on the shore, just waiting to be discovered. Bay St. Louis is an underrated seaside town famous for its friendly locals, laid-back vibe, and charming small businesses. Even if you have just a few hours to spare, you'll feel completely rejuvenated after roaming the shoreline.
Bay St. Louis is underrated, but it's not exactly a hidden gem. Just an hour's drive from New Orleans, it's become a popular destination among travelers looking to spend some quality time on a beautiful, uncrowded beach.
And while the stretch of shoreline is the main attraction, the town shouldn't be overlooked; you'll find a delightful assortment of local cafes, small businesses, and charming places to stay. Pro tip: Visit the highly-recommended Mockingbird Cafe for a specialty coffee and a hearty brunch. If you're in the mood for some ice cream, be sure to check out Creole Creamery, famous for serving generous portions and homemade waffle cones. They also do taster sizes so you can sample a handful of their crave-worthy flavors!
Now, back to the beach. If you're looking for a walk, you can hit the Beach Boulevard Boardwalk Trail, which spans the distance between Bay St. Louis's pier and the Waveland pier. It's 5.6 miles out-and-back, but you don't need to hike all of it if you don't want to. As you make your way to the water, you'll find that the conditions are perfect for beachcombing. Gentle, clean waters make spotting shells easy.
If you find a few that speak to you, you're welcome to take them home with you—just make sure to double-check you haven't picked up a living one! And, as always, leave only footprints at the beach. While this may not be the Gulf's most famous or frequently visited beach, you'll agree that there's something undeniably lovely about it.
Tempted to extend your stay? There are plenty of top-notch accommodations in the area, including some adorable Airbnbs. One that caught my eye is this waterfront home that can sleep up to five guests. It's got an outdoor kitchen, a hot tub, and a boat dock. One recent review shares some highlights of the space: "The place was wonderful. It was private, clean, peaceful, nicely decorated, and stayed cool the whole time, which is important. We loved fishing off the dock, and the location was perfect for our trip."
