You Have to Experience This Canyon Hike In Mississippi For Yourself

The Mississippi Grand Canyon Overlook hike is a quick and easy family-friendly trail with breathtaking geological views.

Mississippi's landscapes offer amazing trails for every type of hiker. Whether you prefer challenging treks or relaxed strolls, the state's dozens of varied trails provide perfect opportunities to immerse yourself in nature. There are hikes through lush forests, along serene rivers, and into striking fields of wildflowers. I love shorter hikes with unique views; they provide a refreshing change of perspective without taking all day. The Mississippi Grand Canyon Overlook trail is a 0.9-mile out-and-back trail near Foxworth, Mississippi, with unique geology and breathtaking views.

The Mississippi Grand Canyon Overlook trail is short and easy, taking about 20 minutes to complete. The path leads from a small parking area to the Red Bluffs, a beautiful geological feature often called the Mississippi Grand Canyon or the Little Grand Canyon. Its stunning shades of reds, oranges, and yellows are captivating, especially against the area's vibrant green trees. The Red Bluffs formed naturally from erosion by the Pearl River, which still flows through the area. It may be hard to believe such geological beauty exists in The Magnolia State!

The hike gains 78 feet in elevation and is considered family- and dog-friendly. It's a popular trail for running, walking, and birding. Doesn't the canyon also look like a fantastic place to take photos?

The trail follows a former paved road, which has eroded in places and is no longer used by cars. The road was rerouted to avoid erosion. Parts of the path are jagged and near steep dropoffs; hikers should exercise caution. Trailgoers also note that the path can be muddy and slippery in some areas, and recommend you bring plenty of water and bug repellant.

Another area trail provides stunning views of the Red Bluffs. The Red Bluff trail is a 0.9-mile loop that's considered moderately challenging. It gains 180 feet in elevation, and the path is sometimes rocky and slippery.

The Red Bluffs are only one of Mississippi's unique natural wonders. There are so many that Only In Your State designed a natural wonders road trip through the state, traveling from the ancient trees in Flora's Petrified Forest to the Greenville Cypress Preserve and beyond.
