Most People Have No Idea Mississippi Has A Lost State Park…And It’s Stunning

Great River Road State Park in Mississippi offers unique scenic views and camping along the Mississippi River but is currently operating on a limited basis.

When it comes to state parks, Mississippi is definitely not lacking. The state is home to nearly two dozen parks, many of which are nationally-ranked. However, there’s one park that may soon be forgotten all together, which would be a real shame because it’s both unique and stunning.

The Great River Road State Park is located along the Great River Road Historic Scenic Byway.

This national scenic byway, which follows the course of the Mississippi River, extends 3,000 miles through 10 states. The portion that runs through Mississippi spans over 200 miles and is basically a diary of American history, telling the story of antebellum America, the Civil War and the long lasting effects of the war.

A popular stop along the renowned scenic byway, Great River Road State Park was officially closed in 2011.

Since closing, the park has re-opened on a limited basis.

A great deal of the park has since been converted into the Great River Road Wildlife Management Area.

Several efforts are being made to return the park to its former glory.

And just to be sure visitors get a good look at the Mississippi River, the park has a 75’ observation tower, offering panoramic views of the Mississippi River.

The park also has a picnic area…

And Perry Martin Lake.

The lake is a 25-acre oxbow of the Mississippi River.

A popular fishing spot, the lake is known for its impressive yield of bass, white perch and catfish.
