Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park offers a unique underground mine tour and scenic nature trails in northern Minnesota.
Ask any Minnesotan about the Iron Range, and they'll know exactly what you're talking about. People outside of Minnesota? Not so much. But that's their loss, because Minnesota's Iron Range is surprisingly beautiful. From scenic mine overlooks to sparkling lakes created by mining activity, they have made an indelible mark on the landscape of northern Minnesota. At one brand-new state park, you can even travel far below the surface of the Earth to tour one little-known mine. It'll feel like a secret, underground world. Take a look:
Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park is Minnesota's newest state park. It opened in the fall of 2017.
You'll find it at 1302 McKinley Park Rd., Soudan, MN 55782. That's about 225 miles - a 3-hour drive - from the Twin Cities.
During your visit, you'll be surrounded by the beautiful nature of northern Minnesota. Trails through the park help you enjoy it to its fullest.
The sparkling waters of Lake Vermilion are certainly worth seeing.
There are also plenty of aboveground mining buildings pieces of machinery to explore.
But perhaps the most interesting aspect of the state park is its underground mine. In fact, this is Minnesota's first iron ore mine. Initial operations started in 1882.
Underground mining on the site began 10 years later in 1892. An elevator brings visitors 1/2-mile below the Earth's surface.
Once below ground, you'll learn all about the mining operations that took place so many years ago.
A short ride on a rail car - just like the miners did a century ago - will give you a small glimpse into the life of a miner.
You'll also learn about much of the equipment that was used to extract ore from the earth.
Because mining had such a huge impact on Minnesota's history and economy, this fascinating tour is a must for any Minnesotan.
