6 Adventurous Trails In Minnesota That Feature Interesting Rock Formations

After all, rock features tell more about the ancient history around you than you'd expect. If you love rocks, wildlife, and natural beauty, these hikes will surely be enjoyable adventures.

1. Great River Bluffs Trail and King's Bluff Loop - Dakota, MN

First on the list is none other than the main trail out at Great River Bluffs State Park. 3.8 miles of easy hiking with entertaining elevation gains will have your inner explorer keeping an eye out for anything interesting. Speaking of interesting, there are plenty of wildflowers, native wildlife, and rock formations to feast your eyes on. Out of the trees is an overlook that frames a ledge sticking out over the rest of the scenery, like mother nature's shoulder.

2. Banning Quarry Loop Trail - Sandstone, MN

Next on the list is a pretty little 2.5-mile loop you'll find out at Banning State Park. Full of rock formations and abandoned buildings, you can see where man and nature both built something that has since broken. Time changes all, and exploring these trails is just part of the adventure.

3. Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory Loop - Duluth, MN

For birding and rock formations at the same time, Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory has a 4.6-mile loop trail that will give you about two hours of good fun. Between a rock and a hard place is sometimes somewhere beautiful.

4. Barn Bluff North and South Trail - Red Wing, MN

Out in Red Wing, a feature along the Mississippi River known as Barn Bluff is an excellent source of natural beauty. These two trails combined run through the whole area, with plenty of overlooks and rocky areas to enjoy once you make your way up the hill.

5. Wolf Creek Falls Trail - Sandstone, MN

Another trail out in Banning State Park to note is Wolf Creek Falls Trail. Though it's only a half-hour hike of 1.5 miles, you'll find that it's just as beautiful as the rest of the park.

6. Temperance River Falls Loop - Schroeder, MN

Ending on a slightly more challenging note, this moderate-level hike out at Temperance River State Park has a bit more to handle. If the rock features draw you in, you'll be treated to beautiful waterfall scenes and water-worn features galore. Plus, you can build up your stamina and skill on the previous hikes before tackling this one.
