The Hidden Nature Park In Minnesota With Its Very Own Waterfall, Spring-Fed Pool, And So Much More

Tucked into the corrugated landscape of Minnesota's Bluff Country, the small town of Hokah, MN is not all that well known beyond the Houston County line. And I think that's a shame, because folks really should have this historic town on their radars, if for no other reason than to visit its magnificent park. Como Falls Park is a hidden gem Minnesota nature park that you'll want to add to your must-visit list the next time you're in the southeastern part of the state.

Hokah, Minnesota, is a historic driftless area community of 550 or so folks that was founded way back in 1851.

It's tucked up against the bluffs of the Root River valley and surrounded by the Richard J. Dorer Memorial Hardwood State Forest.

And tucked up against the town of Hokah is Como Falls Park.

It's truly a hidden gem that's rarely crowded.

It's home to a little less than a mile of trails that skirt the bluffs...

And follow the course of Thompson Creek as it makes its way downstream toward its confluence with the Root River.

A bridge allows you to explore both sides of the creek as you approach the park's eponymous feature.

Como Falls is a beautiful little cascade that formed where Thompson Creek tumbles over a limestone drop and into a pool below.

It's a lot of reward for a little easy hiking.

And if you're there on a warm day, be sure to bring a swimsuit.

Just above the falls, you'll find the most unique municipal pool in the state. The Hokah Pool is a sand-bottom swimming pool that's fed by natural springs flowing up from the area's karst topography. So, the water is cool, refreshing, and naturally filtered.

Although Hokah and its wonderful Minnesota nature park are worth visiting on their own merits, you could certainly make it a stop on a trip to Houston, Spring Grove, or Beaver Creek Valley State Park - or on a road trip along the Historic Bluff Country National Scenic Byway.
