But the best way to appreciate the Great Lake State’s natural beauty is a forest hike that leads to one of our majestic lakes. This secluded beach trail in Norton Shores, Michigan is sure to satisfy your wanderlust.
P. J. Hoffmaster State Park is located in Muskegon County in West Michigan on the shores of Lake Michigan.
Honeymoon Trail at P. J. Hoffmaster is a 1.1-mile out-and-back trail that takes an average of 30 minutes to complete. Highlights for this trail include excellent hiking, views, and wildlife spotting.
A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicles unless you plan to bike or walk here, then you may enter the park for free. Public bathrooms are available at the main beach area of P. J. Hoffmaster State Park.
The trail is considered an easy route though there are stairs. If you take the scenic sand dune overlook path there are several flights of stairs to climb.
But the ascent will be worth it when you reach the top for a breathtaking view of the sand dunes and lush forest.
When you continue down the main pathway you will come to a clearing in the forest that leads to Lake Michigan. You could easily pack a picnic or a few beach towels in a backpack to spend the day at the beach and avoid the State Park crowds.
Since this trail is only a little over a mile long, it would also make a great evening hike to catch one of Lake Michigan’s gorgeous sunsets.
This trail is beautiful in all four seasons with magnificent fall foliage in autumn and serene quiet beauty in winter. Whether you visit in the heat of the summer or the icy cold of winter, this little-known hike will not disappoint.
