We Did the Research, This Is Officially the Most Bizarre Hiking Trail Name in Michigan
This steep trail near Marquette, Michigan, rewards you with epic Lake Superior views. It's a local favorite—with a name as wild as the hike itself.
When I pick a Michigan hiking spot, I start by asking myself: Am I in the mood for sweeping views that practically demand a deep sigh? If so, I head for the Porcupine Mountains. The Escarpment Trail there is pure drama: cliffs dropping off into pine-filled valleys, Lake Superior shimmering in the distance like it’s been Photoshopped. It’s like nature’s answer to a standing ovation.
But let’s face it... Michigan doesn’t really do bad views. So sometimes I mix it up and look for something… stranger. Something with personality. Which is how I found myself staring at a trailhead for Hogback Mountain, which is possibly the best-named hike in the state and definitely one of the most rewarding.
Nestled in the Little Presque Isle Natural Area just outside Marquette, Hogback is part rugged climb, part spiritual reset. The name might sound like a rejected cartoon villain, but don’t let that fool you. This is one of the most scenic, unusual hiking spots in Michigan, and it absolutely deserves a spot on your bucket list.
The Little Presque Isle area is basically nature showing off. Think dense pine and hardwood forests, 60-foot sandstone cliffs, ancient rock formations older than your great-great-great-everything, and the kind of pristine shoreline that makes you involuntarily whisper, “Woah.” With more than four miles of Lake Superior coastline, the area feels wild in the best way, like how I imagine Michigan before it was even a state.
As you make your way up Hogback, you’ll pass through thick woods that feel like a scene from a fantasy novel. There’s a good chance you’ll spot white-tailed deer, pileated woodpeckers, or even a fox darting between trees like it’s late for a forest meeting. The air smells like pine needles and damp stone, and the wind carries that sharp, clean Lake Superior scent that somehow wakes up every corner of your brain.
The trail eventually opens up to granite outcrops and big sky. The final stretch to the summit is steep (this is where your legs earn their lunch), but once you’re on top, the view is absurd in the best way. To the north, you’ve got nothing but Lake Superior, deep blue and endless. To the south, the city of Marquette dots the horizon like a model train village. On especially clear days, you might even catch a glimpse of the Keweenaw Peninsula or Pictured Rocks.
And yes, the name. Hogback. Possibly named for the hump-shaped silhouette of the mountain, it’s the kind of name that sticks in your head and gets you talking. Which is sort of the point... this is a hike that feels like a story, not just an outdoor chore, which is my ultimate goal every single time.
Marquette itself is a gem. There’s a thriving local arts scene, fresh-caught Lake Superior whitefish on most menus (in fact, Marquette is home to one of the best whitefish meals in Michigan), and the kind of coffee shops that make you want to buy a flannel and write a novel. Come back in winter and you’ll find the town transformed into a holiday postcard, complete with twinkle lights and snowy streets. It’s one of Michigan’s unofficial “Christmas towns,” and, y'all, it lives up to the title.
So, if you're craving a trail that mixes jaw-dropping scenery with just the right amount of oddball charm, Hogback Mountain is it. Skip the obvious, embrace the bizarre, and take in a view that might just ruin all other views for you.
