Embrace the Cold and Venture Out on This Scenic Winter Hike in Michigan
Lovers of all things winter, this one's for you! This incredibly scenic hiking trail in Michigan is only made better in the snow.
Winter in Michigan is cold. No, it's more than just cold; winter in Michigan tends to be positively frigid, and honestly, it can make the idea of spending time outdoors less inviting. That being said, though, winter is one of my favorite times to go out and enjoy the natural world, and Michigan is an amazing place for this despite the frigid nature of... well, nature.
Enter the legendary Brown Bridge Nature Loop, a trail that's only made better when covered in layers of snow and ice. Located in the Brown Bridge Quiet Area, this amazing little slice of paradise lends itself perfectly to a frozen landscape. It's equal parts beautiful and majestic, and should you dress nice and warm, you won't even worry about the temperatures outside.
Personally, I prefer to dress in layers; layers offer significant increases in overall comfort when dealing with sub-freezing temperatures. I always start with a pair of cozy socks; from there, I slap on some additional layers, and I'm good to go!
But I digress. At just five miles long, the Brown Bridge Nature Loop is rated as moderately challenging, thanks to some inclines and hills. In the winter, snow and ice are also worth considering - be careful and take your time!
On this hike, you'll meander through the Brown Bridge Quiet Area (which is every bit as peaceful and serene as it sounds). Along the way, you'll have multiple opportunities to spot birds, wildlife, and other points of interest; there's something so magical about Michigan's wilderness covered in wintery goodness, and this trail is one of my favorite places to celebrate the season.
This trail is popular during the summer months, but it's terribly underrated in the winter. Truly, one of my favorite times to get outdoors and enjoy the world around me is right now; everything's a little quieter. The snow lends itself to silence very well. The silence is, at least for me, wonderful for the soul.
The trail is well-marked, and there's plenty of shade. As you go, you'll discover a mixture of evergreen and not-so-evergreen trees, all offering respite in their own ways. Dogs are welcome on a leash, so keep Fido leashed up (and his feet warm with some doggie socks or booties).
