Don’t Try This One Hike in Michigan if You’re Afraid of Heights

Explore the Minong Ridge Trail in Isle Royale National Park in Michigan, where there are often more moose than people.

If you’ve ever wanted to start a hike after arriving by seaplane (or ferry), now’s your chance. Located within Isle Royale National Park, the Minong Ridge Trail is easily the most extreme hike in Michigan. At more than 27 miles long, this epic point-to-point hike is perfect for experienced hikers looking to stimulate their sense of adventure.

The Minong Ridge Trail is considered a hard route with more than 2,900 feet of elevation gain. If you’re afraid of heights, the ridgeline can definitely induce some anxiety. There are points on the ridgeline trail where the path is only 18 inches wide with steep bluffs on either side of you. Additionally, hikers will encounter water crossings that require navigating both wooden planks and beaver dams. Hikers have shared that crossing the beaver dams is one of the most difficult parts of the trail.

Many hikers have shared that the Minong Ridge Trail is the most challenging hike they’ve ever done. If you’re going to tackle this task, it’s important to ensure you have trekking poles and good footwear. Additionally, you’ll want to be sure you’re an experienced hiker who has some technical hiking and scrambling skills.

One of the most fun and fascinating parts of the hike is that there are typically more moose on the island than hikers at any given time. Be aware of your surroundings, and always give nature its space. This route generally takes hikers about 12 hours to complete. That said, there are six campgrounds along the way so that you can break up your journey.  As mentioned earlier, getting to the trailhead is an experience in itself. You must decide if you want to arrive via the public ferry, the Voyageur II, or invest in a private seaplane or boat. Either way, you’ll need a backcountry permit if you’re planning to camp along the Minong Ridge Trail.

The route for the trail is a popular trek, but there are a few options for slight variations based on the route’s different entry points. Do some research to determine which entry point and length make the most sense for your adventure. Regardless, the trail is extremely primitive and receives little year-round maintenance. It is highly recommended to have navigation experience and a strong understanding of compass use before setting out. Throughout this trail, particularly on the high ridge line, you’ll encounter a spectacular view of Lake Superior. While the Minong Ridge Trail is a challenge, it offers a large reward for those who tackle it.

This rugged path through Michigan’s Isle Royale National Park demands resilience, careful planning, and a true sense of adventure. It's easy to see why it's often considered Michigan's most extreme hike. With steep bluffs alongside narrow trails and the ever-present risk of encountering a majestic moose, hikers must be alert and focused at all times. That said, those who complete this incredible hike will be rewarded with some of the best views of Lake Superior and a true chance to connect with the wild beauty of what’s left of the untouched United States wilderness.
