When you think about Detroit, you might picture towering buildings, factories emitting smoke, and busy residents making their way from place to place downtown. While there’s certainly truth to these images, Detroit is also home to its fair share of natural beauty - including one spot that might just make you forget how close you are to Michigan’s largest metropolis.
Blue Heron Lagoon can be accessed via The Strand on Belle Isle.
This lovely body of water is situated on Detroit’s iconic island park, which encompasses 982 breathtaking acres and features year-round attractions for the entire family to appreciate.
In addition to man-made wonders like the Whitcomb Conservatory and the Belle Isle Aquarium, Belle Isle also offers visitors the chance to enjoy a slice of natural beauty in the Motor City.
Blue Heron Lagoon is one of the most marvelous spots on the island, featuring brilliant blue water, plenty of greenery during the warmer months, and a real sense of enchantment.
When you’re hoping to explore the lagoon, which now connects directly to the Detroit River via a man-made waterway, take a stroll along the 2.2-mile Blue Heron Lagoon Loop trailway.
The fruits of the lagoon’s recent restoration efforts are evident in the presence of fish and other wildlife throughout the area. As you stroll, there’s no telling what sort of creatures you’ll spot.
Along the path, you’ll also catch glimpses of the iconic Belle Isle Lighthouse, an Art Deco structure that adds extra magic to the island park. Talk about a fun escape from typical city life.
As you gaze out upon the waters of Detroit’s Blue Heron Lagoon, you’ll feel like you’ve embarked on some sort of colorful fairytale adventure. You might never want to head back home.
