This Is the Most Secluded Part of This Michigan State Park

Enjoy a secluded experience of one of Michigan's most popular state parks.

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is one of the most photographed areas of Michigan, and it's obvious why. The vast, 60,000-acre expanse of waterfalls, lakefront views, and ancient forests creates a stunning backdrop for any kind of outdoor adventure. Hikers are drawn to the park, especially trails like the Escarpment Trail, which offers breathtaking views of the park's most famous feature: Lake of the Clouds. But if you're looking for a more secluded park experience, you're in luck. The Lost Lake Trail is an enchanting alternative that's significantly more secluded compared to the park's higher-altitude trails. And it's every bit as magical.

Today, we're exploring a portion of the Lost Lake Trail known as Lost Creek Yurt and Lost Lake via Lost Lake Trail. It's a 3.5-mile out-and-back trail with about 500 feet in elevation gain, and the trek is considered moderately challenging. To start your adventure, take the South Boundary Road and park near the Lost Creek Outpost Campground. From there, follow the Lost Creek Lake Trail all the way to Lost Creek Lake.

There are a few things to note about this trail so that you feel prepared for your adventure. First of all, like many hikes in the area, it can get very buggy. Also, if there has been rain recently, the trail can be quite muddy, so be sure to plan accordingly and bring your sturdiest pair of hiking shoes. This trail is dog-friendly, but please keep your dog on leash.

Now that we've gone through the logistics, it's time to focus on the sheer magic of this trail. The majority of the hike will lead you through an old-growth forest, which many have compared to the Pacific Northwest. The hike will probably take you about an hour and a half, but you'll want to set aside some time to admire these beautiful, otherworldly surroundings. The trail is well-marked and shaded, allowing you to disconnect and feel completely immersed in the natural beauty of this place.

There are some boardwalk portions that will lead you over most of the muddy areas, and there's a stream to cross, but stepping stones make this easy. The lake is the turnaround point of the trail, so be sure to soak in those magnificent water views and pause for a much-needed walk or picnic break.
