Are you fascinated by both history and nature? There’s one destination here in the Great Lakes State that you absolutely must explore, whether you’re planning for an upcoming family outing or plotting your next vacation in the Upper Peninsula. These fascinating ruins in Michigan will take you on a journey to the past while helping you appreciate the area’s pretty surroundings. Get ready to explore.
The Bay Furnace Historic Site is located along the aptly named Bay Furnace Road in Munising.
This unique destination is often overlooked in favor of Munising’s more famous attractions, including the breathtaking Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. If you’re in the area, the site is worth a visit.
When you visit Bay Furnace, you’ll find a fascinating combination of natural beauty and historic importance. The site houses the ruins of a once-active blast furnace that once smelted so-called local pig iron.
While the furnace was only active between 1870 and 1877, it has been stabilized in recent years to preserve its amazing history. In fact, the furnace is all that remains of a fire-destroyed town called Onota.
To reach the ruins, you’ll need to embark on a short but scenic hike from the parking area. At approximately ⅛ of a mile, the path to Bay Furnace is decidedly straightforward, but it’s surrounded by natural splendor.
After all, this historic locale sits along the shores of Lake Superior within Hiawatha National Forest. There’s even an accompanying campground, Bay Furnace Campground, where visitors can spend time overnight.
As you explore the area, take time to examine a series of informative signs and plaques that detail the furnace’s function and history. There are also markers detailing local wildflowers and other foliage.
When you’re looking for an out-of-the-box adventure that perfectly combines whispers of the past with Upper Peninsula scenery, venture to Bay Furnace HIstoric Site. You’ll be enamored with the wonders of this spot.
