Over 40 Years Ago, Massachusetts Was Hit With The Worst Blizzard In History

The Blizzard of 1978 in Massachusetts was one of the worst in history, causing significant damage and loss of life.

While the Bay State is typically home to some notoriously bad winters, we can be thankful that it could always be worse! Winter in Massachusetts has brought some incredibly harsh snow storms, but one storm back in '78 is amongst one of the worst. Reaching almost 30 inches of snow and injuring over 4,000 people, the weather event of February 1978 will go down in history as one of the worst blizzards in Massachusetts. Once you learn about the infamous Northeastern blizzard of '78 and recall this record snowfall in Massachusetts, you won't complain about snow ever again.

While there have been many noteworthy blizzards in Massachusetts history, the Northeastern United States blizzard of 1978 takes the name of the worst blizzard in Bay State history.

This catastrophic blizzard caused over $500 million in damage and killed 73 people.

The historic storm took place from February 5th to February 7th, 1978. A total of 27.1 inches of snowfall were recorded in Boston.

Even though there has technically been one other blizzard with more snowfall (the 2003 President's Day storm that recorded snowfall of 27.6 inches,) the blizzard of '78 arguably did the most damage.

Not only did this winter storm cause hundreds of millions of dollars in damage, it also took the lives of 73 people and injured over 4,000.

This blizzard didn't only affect Massachusetts, but the entire Northeast, including breaking many records in Atlanta.

The Massachusetts winters might feel horrid, but they can always be worse. 43 years ago we were experiencing the worst blizzard in Northeast history, and we hope we never experience such a catastrophic blizzard again.
