Explore The Sunderland Caves Along The Famous Robert Frost Trail In Massachusetts

With miles of coastline and plenty of mountains, numerous trails around the state of Massachusetts can lead you to someplace wonderful. Whether it's a scenic overlook, a waterfall, or a cave you're searching for, there's truly a hike for everyone. Within Mount Toby State Forest, visitors can take a hike to a cave found along a section of the famous Robert Frost Trail. The Sunderland Caves in Massachusetts are a natural wonder that anyone with a sense of adventure would want to explore.

If you trek along its full length, the Robert Frost Trail is one of the longest hikes in the Bay State at 47 miles. However, in Mount Toby State Forest, a short hike along a section of the famous trail (blazed in orange) will lead to a spectacular cave known as Sunderland Caves.

The total length of this moderately difficult section of trail is 2.5 miles and you will experience an elevation gain of 544 feet.

You must be mindful of the signs that point to the caves because it's easy to veer off onto another trail. You don't want to miss the caves!

Along the trail, you'll see plenty of rock formations and giant boulders which as fascinating on their own.

Once you see the rock chasm, you're close to Sunderland Caves.

Once you find Sunderland Caves, you'll see that the entrance is somewhat narrow. It's possible to go inside the cave but it's a tight squeeze so plan accordingly. Otherwise, you can enjoy it from the outside.

If you're intent on exploring the cave, make sure you bring a helmet and a headlamp or flashlight as it's pretty dark in there! The temperature also drops so be prepared for that as well.

Whether you go inside the cave to explore or just enjoy what you can see from the exterior, this is quite a fascinating natural wonder we have here in Massachusetts!
