There’s An Incredible Meteor Shower Happening This Summer And Massachusetts Has A Front Row Seat
Explore the awe-inspiring natural wonders of Massachusetts, including gorges, caves, waterfalls, and scenic vistas.
Massachusetts is in for a spectacular show this summer. Best of all, you don’t need to buy tickets – you just have to look up. The annual Perseids meteor shower is returning to the Bay State this season and it’s shaping up to be one of the brightest displays yet.
The Perseid meteor shower will be at its peak in Massachusetts between August 11, 12, and 13.
You can actually catch increased meteor activity between July 17 and Aug. 24, but the show will be its best and brightest between Aug. 12 and 13. That evening, you can expect to see anywhere between 60 to 100 meteors an hour!
This year’s shower is expected to be one of the brightest on record due to a very thin crescent moon making for dark skies.
The less light in the sky, the better you can see the meteors as the streak across the stars. Whereas showers in recent years have been slightly obscured by full moons, this year's show is sure to be particularly spectacular and visible.
The meteors are produced by the passing of the comet Swift-Tuttle. This is the one time of year you’ll be able to see them!
The best viewing time for this shower will be between midnight and the pre-dawn hour on the evening between Aug. 12 and 13. Try to view the shower somewhere with as little light pollution as possible, such as a state park or a rural area.
