We Love Our National Parks, but This Massachusetts Park Is Just as Majestic
For a majestic waterfall, you don't have to leave the Bay State. Bash Bish Falls State Park is the best park in Massachusetts.
As I plan my travels across the northeast, it's easy to find some incredible national parks to put on the agenda. North of Massachusetts, Acadia National Park is calling my name for a return visit! But if we focus too much on those headlining parks, it's easy to miss some gorgeous hidden gems lurking in our backyard. My home state of New Jersey has some stunning state parks, and so does Massachusetts, and one is definitely on my agenda when I make my way up to the Bay State again! This is, of course, the iconic Bash Bish Falls State Park.
The famous cascade is the headliner attraction, naturally, but there's so much more that makes this the best park in Massachusetts. It has a unique geographical distinction and also features stunning overlooks and beautiful hiking paths. While it's one of the state's smaller parks, it's a destination that everyone needs to experience, and it makes an amazing day trip spot on your travels.
Bash Bish Falls State Park is a top destination in Massachusetts for one reason: its stunning waterfall. However, this 424-acre park is a beautiful nature destination in many other ways, and is worth exploring more thoroughly.
The park has a unique distinction; it's directly on the border between the Bay State and the Empire State, and the falls' signature trail can be easily accessed from either state. The park lies entirely within Massachusetts, though, and it's one of the state's prides and joys!
The falls are accessed from a 2.1-mile trail appropriately named Bash Bish Falls Trail, and it's a moderate route with a 534-foot elevation gain. While you'll encounter some rocky terrain, the trail is very popular and should be safe to navigate. You'll encounter some truly stunning overlooks along the way, and the trail is open to dogs if they're on a leash.
The waterfall is just as impressive as you'd expect—a unique twin waterfall cascade that forms around a rock and finishes in an impressive crystal pool. Swimming is not allowed in the pool, but it's one of the most iconic views in all of Massachusetts.
And if you've been here once, well, you haven't seen it all. During the fall, the entire park turns into a kaleidoscope of autumn colors, and during the winter, this is one of the most impressive frozen waterfalls in the northeast.
Have you explored Bash Bish Falls State Park in Massachusetts before? If not, tell a friend about this Bay State gem and plan a visit! You can see more pictures of the falls and trail on the official AllTrails trail listing, and check out the Massachusetts State Parks website for all the park's amenities! If you're new to hiking, a subscription to AllTrails + is great to have when exploring the trails. The app will provide you with point-by-point directions to make navigating every trail easy. And if the hike helps you work up an appetite, head to the nearby town of Great Barrington to explore some of its diverse restaurants!
