Umpachene Falls is an unforgettable waterfall hike in Massachusetts located in New Marlborough. The waterfall is tucked away just off of Umpachene Falls Park and can be reached via a short and lovely hike through the forest.
This waterfall is unique because it flows in a "stairway" down a staggered series of stone steps. The waters that feed the cascade come from the Umpachene River and eventually meet the Konkapot River.
It would be easy to spend hours admiring the beautiful movement of the water. When the waterfall is flowing more gently, it is possible to climb the "staircase" and relax on the stone steps as the water rushes by. Please be sure you wear sturdy footwear if you attempt this and always put your safety first.
One of the best parts of visiting this waterfall is that swimming is possible in the warmer months (or the winter, if you’re especially hardy). There’s a shallow, wide pool at the base of the waterfall perfect for wading when the water isn’t flowing too strongly. It’s not very deep, but you’l be able to paddle around easily enough.
The park by the waterfall also features picnic tables and benches, which makes it perfect for grabbing a quick snack before or after admiring the falls. The parking lot at the park is reserved for New Marlborough residents, but additional parking can be found just a few steps away.
