Massachusetts Is Home to One of America’s Largest Zoos

There's just something magical about zoos. Not only are there majestic animals to observe, but there are also endless opportunities to learn. Fortunately, for those of us who call the Bay State home, there are plenty of opportunities for unique animal encounters in Massachusetts. Those of us who have been to Southwick's Zoo in Massachusetts know what a surreal place it is to view a wide variety of animals. Plus, it offers so much more to visitors! Southwick's Zoo isn't just the biggest zoo in Massachusetts; it's perhaps one of the most remarkable attractions in New England.

Located in Mendon, not too far from the Massachusetts-Rhode Island state line, Southwick's Zoo is one of the best places in New England to take the entire family. The zoo is a sizable 200 acres, including its 35-acre Deer Forest! At such a large zoo, you should plan on spending an entire day here.

This large zoo offers visitors a chance to see over 850 exotic animals of over 150 species from around the globe. There are also several wonderful areas to explore including a walk-thru aviary, a petting zoo, and a Rainforest Adventure Maze! Animals are housed in naturalistic habitats which give visitors a glimpse of what it's like to see a variety of species in the wild.

You'll see some incredible animals from an African lion to a Bactrian camel, capybara, ring-tailed lemurs, a variety of reptiles, insects, and a whole lot more. Visitors can also enjoy presentations from some of the zookeepers as well as attractions like the zip-line adventure, the Skyfari Sky Ride, and the Woodland Express Train.

The zoo is a remarkable place to visit year-round, but especially so during the late fall and early winter for Winter Wonderland, when the property transforms into a magical world of light displays.
